Get the Most Out of Your Shed's Storage Space

You might find that your storage needs have grown since you first bought your shed. Don't panic, though; you don't necessarily need to spend thousands replacing it with a larger building. There are a number of ways to work with the shed you already have and maximize the space that it offers. Read on to learn how to create some much-needed room.

Get It Off the Floor

Never underestimate the value of overhead storage space. Adding a loft can help you use that space to store seasonal items that you'll only need to access once in a while. Mounted shelves can help you see tools and other items more easily so you don't go out and buy something you already have.

Designate a Place for Everything

Even if you have storage tools like boxes and wall hooks, they only help so much if you struggle with organization overall. Plastic bins are a good place to start. Use sticker labels to mark what each one contains, or buy clear bins so you can see inside. Also, when you are storing items, map out where your stuff will go. Know which items can be neatly tucked into a corner to be used only occasionally, and which need to be more frequently accessed.

Make Everything Stackable

If your space is going to be packed tightly, invest in bins or crates that are designed to stack on top of and beside each other. You'll be able to stack higher and fit more from wall to wall. IKEA and The Container Store are good places to look for something like this.

Clean It Up

It is a good idea to go through your shed a few times a year and sort out what to keep, sell, donate, and throw away. A good strategy for getting this done is to sort all the shed's contents into piles based on what you'll do with each. Pick a day with good weather to remove everything from the shed at once. Sweep the shed's floor, wipe down the walls and shelves, and put everything you plan to keep back in an organized way.
