Top 5 Shed Security Tips

Your backyard shed is not just an add-on, it’s an investment and part of your home. Even if you only think of it as a storage unit, your shed can be a target for theft. Or, like a garage, it can serve as a good hiding spot for a thief. There are many articles and blogs that offer shed security tips on preventing theft (this one from Tips from Down the Lane is excellent). Here are some quick tips to protect your shed, and even use it as an asset to deter potential burglars.

5 Tips to Secure Storage Sheds

1. Keep the area around your shed tidy.

Make sure your plants and foliage aren’t overgrown, or that your backyard isn’t disorganized in any way. Thieves will feel more comfortable targeting your shed or home if they feel as though you don’t have a good vantage point.

2. Light it up!

You can add a motion detector to your shed just like you would for your home. And, we’re sure the folks at your local home and garden store wouldn’t mind giving you the proper install tips.

3. Invest in a good locking system.

A simple padlock is nice, but take it a step further by securing your shed with a lock most suitable for it. Investigate to find out which padlock, padbolt, hasp or staple would work best. If your shed has a window, look into purchasing window locks as well.

4. Ring the alarm!

A stand-alone alarm works great for outside storage buildings.

5. When thinking about Shed Security, Remember “Out of sight, out of mind.”

You wouldn’t leave your blinds open, especially with valuables placed in front of them. Then strategically place expensive garden or power tools away from windows or the door. You may even want to lock up anything considered valuable inside your shed, just like you would a safe box in your home.

Keeping some of these things in mind can significantly lower your chances of theft overall. Do you have any tips of your own to offer? We would love to hear your shed security tips.
